Dolling in GeneralI know people have written dozens of deviations and journals explaining this before this one that are better written, but I'm making one too so hush.Dolling. A word people outside of our little bubble usually don't understand. When most people think of "dolls" they think of Barbies, Raggedy Ann, etc. And those are dolls too, absolutely. Usually however, when a doller makes dolls, they are not referring to those things. Dollers make dolls from either traced bases or original bases. What is the difference between these, you ask? It's simple really.Traced bases are bases traced from a picture. Usually anime pictures nowadays, although I've seen traced cartoon and comic bases as well. These bases are far less likely to be seen in the pageant crowd, but it does happen on occasion.Traced bases are NOT bases for My Little Pony, the Lion King, and whatever other animal based thing you can possibly think of to trace. That is for LIN
About Tracing For BasesNot long ago a close friend of mine and a very talented artist had one of her images traced. Someone ignored her comments and watermark and traced the image, linking it directly back to her dA. I browsed this person's gallery and they traced various other artist's work. All of which are on dA and many of which did not permit the use. When I brought it up politely that this was not a good thing, the artist just blocked me from their page. This journal is sort of a PSA, I guess. I'm not against traced bases (clearly) but I don't encourage people to go on a tracing spree and trace everyone's work. Making a traced base is often times helpful (it's taught me a lot over the years) but be aware of what you're tracing before you start. If you're not aware then you may end up with a lot of fire on your hands when someone discovers what you did. Flame wars can start as artists can sometimes advertise you as a tracer (and label you a thief because of it) and allow their "following" to white knigh
Why credit and notify?Hi all,It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials. What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock? If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
